In Volume One: Chapter One: The Wrong Ship, Frankie hears the crew of the Ice Lancer sing a sea shanty abovedeck. The music and lyrics are below..
The ship called for an able crew.
But none showed up; we’ll have to do. Until the sea will claim us too, we’ll be sailing for our Lady. Make safe the lines, hand over hand. Repitch the keel at the skip’s command. We chase the sea, our backs to land, always sailing for our Lady. Hey, ho, what calls to me? The roaring of a wild sea. Hold fast, or this gale will be the last you’ll ever know. Hold fast, or the sea will rise and drag you down below. We’re not the best, as press gangs go; we often heave when we ought to ho. So when it’s still, they make us row. We’re out sailing for our Lady. Our captain is an old seadog. She has all hands sounding in the fog. And while we work, she’ll drink our grog while we’re sailing for our Lady. Hey, ho, what calls to me? The roaring of a wild sea. Hold fast, or this gale will be the last you’ll ever know. Hold fast, or the sea will rise and drag you down below. Think mutiny: you’ll get the whip. Each sailing might be a one-way trip. Until we hear, “Abandon ship!” we’ll be sailing for our Lady. Hey, ho, what calls to me? The roaring of a wild sea. Hold fast, or this gale will be the last you’ll ever know. Hold fast, or the sea will rise and drag you down below. |
