Drift off to a sailor's lullaby from
|
Just rest your eyes, my little one.
The hardship of the day is done. Now you must dream of sweeter things, like those I’ve dreamed for you. And I will guard you while you sleep, and keep you from the deepest deep. You soar on sailor’s wings of brightest blue. For you know that I will always hold you in arms both safe and calm. And with me you need never fear the storm. And one day when you’re strong and tall, you won’t need me to be here at all. But I will always be with you, no matter where you sail. For like the seas and like the skies, you’ll see me there when you open your eyes. Now sleep, and dream of sweeter things for you. Just sleep. We’ll dream of sweeter things for you. |
Hoist the sails to a sea shanty
from an upcoming book!
Soar along with the funereal march from Running to Ground
From over land and air we come at last,
carrying burdens weighing down our flights. The dead fly with us, pulling at our past until we fail and feel the mountain heights press sharp against our chests with freedom’s call. Oh, let us go, let us go. Then fall we to the ground and sink below to live in graves and pay our mortal debt. Yet up above, flames of the future glow and bid us rise again and endure yet, for holding to the past is certain death. Oh, let us go, let us go. We struggle with the chains that bind and tie, for each link that we break is who we are and histories reforge them as we cry. But break we down the walls that block and bar to see the brilliant light that shines above. Oh, let us go, let us go. Then presently we leave the ghosts behind and stagger forward, free of added weight. Our destiny ours alone to define, our wings we spread again to lift us straight and to the clouds we come back home again. Oh, let us go, let us go. |
The ship called for an able crew.
But none showed up; we’ll have to do.
Until the sea will claim us too,
we’ll be sailing for our Lady.
Make safe the lines, hand over hand.
Repitch the keel at the skip’s command.
We chase the sea, our backs to land,
always sailing for our Lady.
Hey, ho, what calls to me?
The roaring of a wild sea.
Hold fast, or this gale will be
the last you’ll ever know.
Hold fast, or the sea will rise
and drag you down below.
We’re not the best, as press gangs go;
we often heave when we ought to ho.
So when it’s still, they make us row.
We’re out sailing for our Lady.
Our captain is an old seadog.
He has all hands sounding in the fog.
And while we work, he’ll drink our grog
while we’re sailing for our Lady.
Hey, ho, what calls to me?
The roaring of a wild sea.
Hold fast, or this gale will be
the last you’ll ever know.
Hold fast, or the sea will rise
and drag you down below.
Think mutiny: you’ll get the whip.
Each sailing might be a one-way trip.
Until we hear, “Abandon ship!”
we’ll be sailing for our Lady.
